Houston Area Lakes

Bass fishing on Lake Conroe.

Lake Conroe is one of the Houston area's most popular outdoor recreational destinations.  A man-made impoundment over twenty miles long, and up to 70 feet deep.

Water is normally lightly stained, with white, blue/black and pumpkin-seed among the most popular bait colors.

In many ways, Conroe is two distinct ecosystems.

The southern half of the lake is deep with a heavily residential shoreline.  This area is popular with power boats, and the bass here are heavily pressured.

Most of the northern half of the lake, above FM1097, is surrounded by the Sam Houston National Forest.  Residences are relatively sparse.   Extensive flooded timber provides cover but limits powerboats to well-defined channels.  Bass are somewhat less pressured, but are still easily spooked.

Bass fishing on Lake Fayette.

Lake Fayette (aka Fayette County Reservoir) is located about 90 minutes from West Houston near La Grange.  As a power plant cooling lake, the water is unusually warm permitting year round bass fishing.  The spawn occurs in February, and the water temperature reaches the high 90's mid-summer.

The dam and power plant dominate the southern shore.  The rest of the shoreline is undeveloped, other than two small camping/boat ramp areas.  Natural colors such as white, shad, and pumpkin-seed are popular, as is chrome.  My go-to bait is a blue/silver rat-l-trap, which seems productive in almost all conditions.
